Freezer Cryopreservation: General
This cryogenic freeze allows freezing down to temperatures as low as -152°
and enables semi-permanent preservation of samples. This
cryogenic freezer stores samples below the ice recrystalisation
temperature of -130°C thereby retaining a high level of cell viability.
Ice crystals can damage the viability of cells so it is
important that the ice within the cell is amorphous. For a
mixed solution containing Me2SO and other cryoprotectants,
recent research confirms that recrystallization occurs around
-115°C. Such preservation maintains vitrification without
further crystallization within and outside cells. Other recent
cryogenic freezer findings show that preserving cattle sperm at -135°C is
insufficient, and also that superconductivity experiments
require temperatures of at least -148°C. These cases show the
